Major Boost for Telangana Students: Free Power for Educational Institutions!

Telangana announces free electricity for government schools and colleges, benefiting students with improved infrastructure, digital access, and learning environments.

In a historic move to strengthen the power sector and ease the financial burden on public services, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced the creation of a third electricity distribution company (Discom) dedicated to managing free power schemes—including those that benefit government schools, colleges, and tribal educational institutions.

🔌 What This Means for Education:

  • âś… Free Electricity for Government Schools and Colleges: This will significantly reduce operational costs for educational institutions, enabling them to redirect funds toward improving academic infrastructure, digital learning tools, and student welfare.
  • âś… Enhanced Learning Environments: Reliable and cost-free electricity ensures uninterrupted access to fans, lights, digital classrooms, and computer labs—especially critical during exams and summer months.
  • âś… Support for Tribal & Remote Areas: Schools in tribal and rural belts will particularly benefit, with power supply no longer being a barrier to quality education.
  • âś… Indirect Benefits for Students: Reduced electricity expenses mean institutions may have more resources for hiring teachers, providing study materials, and organizing extracurricular activities.

This move is part of the broader Gruha Jyothi initiative and is aimed at streamlining state-run subsidy schemes by reducing the financial load on the existing two Discoms.

📍Education Today India applauds this initiative and hopes it marks the beginning of more student-centric reforms in Telangana.

RTC Strike Intensifies in Telangana: College Students & Public Hit Hard

RTC strike disrupts college students and commuters across Telangana, increasing travel costs, absenteeism, and daily hardships amid reduced bus services.

The ongoing RTC strike across Telangana is continuing to disrupt daily life, with its impact now being felt more sharply by college students and the general public. While schools are currently closed due to summer holidays, colleges remain functional—creating a major challenge for thousands of students dependent on public transport.

Protests at depots like Jeedimetla Bus Depot have led to reduced bus services, leaving commuters stranded or forced to seek costly alternatives. College students, especially those traveling from outskirts and rural areas, are struggling to attend classes regularly. Many are either missing lectures or spending significantly more on autos and private transport.

The situation is equally difficult for office-goers and daily wage workers, who rely heavily on RTC buses for affordable commuting. With fares of autos and cabs rising due to demand, the financial burden on common people has increased considerably.

Parents and students are expressing frustration, as there is no uniform relief—schools are shut for holidays, but higher education continues without transport support. This imbalance is adding to stress, attendance issues, and academic disruption.

Amid the unrest, K. P. Vivekanand has backed the RTC workers, criticizing the government’s response and urging immediate resolution of their demands.

Until a solution is reached, it is the everyday commuter—particularly college students—who remain the worst affected in this ongoing deadlock.
