Hyderabad –
The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) has appealed to Meenakshi Natarajan, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Telangana, to facilitate a damage assessment survey on a 400-acre land parcel located in Kancha Gachibowli, adjacent to the university campus.
During a meeting held on Sunday with Natarajan, students and representatives from various civil society groups expressed their concerns regarding the condition of the land. The Students’ Union requested permission for a collaborative survey involving the Union, expert faculty members, and researchers to assess environmental damage and collect biodiversity data.
In a memorandum submitted to Natarajan, the Students’ Union further demanded the withdrawal of charges filed against students in connection with protests. According to UoHSU President Umesh Ambedkar, several students have been named in multiple FIRs registered across police stations in Telangana. Two students currently remain in jail.
The Students’ Union emphasized the importance of preserving the biodiversity of the region and ensuring that student rights are protected.
The meeting reflects the growing concerns over the environmental impact on university-adjacent lands and the legal issues faced by student activists.

EDUCATION BUDGET 2026: What Students and Universities Need to Know
It strengthens healthcare education, boosts pharma research, expands allied health training, and aligns universities with jobs and future-ready skills.
The Union Budget 2026–27, presented on February 1, 2026, by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, signals a decisive shift in India’s education priorities. Anchored in the spirit of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and India’s aspiration to become a global knowledge and skills hub, the Budget places strong emphasis on medical and health education, applied skilling, and research-led growth. For students, universities, and education providers, this Budget opens up new opportunities—especially in emerging and employment-oriented disciplines.
Big Push for Medical, Pharma and Allied Health Education
One of the most significant takeaways from Education Budget 2026 is the large-scale expansion of training capacity in pharmaceuticals, allied health professions, mental healthcare, and traditional medicine. A Rs. 10,000-crore bio-pharma sectoral development outlay has been announced to strengthen pharmaceutical education, clinical training, and research ecosystems across the country.
The government has proposed setting up three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs), while upgrading the existing seven NIPERs to enhance advanced training, research capabilities, and industry linkages. This move is expected to directly benefit students aspiring for careers in pharma R&D, regulatory sciences, and clinical research—areas where India is rapidly gaining global relevance.
Allied Health Professionals: Meeting India’s Healthcare Demand
Addressing the growing shortage of skilled healthcare manpower, the Budget announces a major expansion of Allied Health Professional (AHP) education across 10 key disciplines, including optometry, anaesthesia technology, applied psychology, and behavioural health. The government aims to train one lakh AHPs over the next five years, significantly strengthening hospital and community health systems.
In addition, the announcement of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda reflects a renewed focus on traditional systems of medicine, aligning with India’s cultural heritage and global demand for alternative healthcare solutions. The proposal to establish a new NIMHANS-like national institute in North India, along with a major upgrade of the existing institute in Ranchi, underscores the growing importance of mental health education and services.
Short-Term Skilling and the Rise of ‘Corporate Mitras’
Recognising the need for practical, job-ready skills—especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities—the Finance Minister highlighted the role of professional bodies such as Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Institute of Company Secretaries of India, and Institute of Cost Accountants of India.
These bodies will design short-term modular courses and practical toolkits to create a new cadre of “corporate mitras”. The objective is to provide locally available professional support in accounting, compliance, and corporate governance for small businesses and enterprises. For students and young professionals, this opens pathways to quick employability and entrepreneurship-oriented careers without waiting for long academic cycles.
Research, AI Skills and Education-to-Employment Linkages
Research and innovation remain central to Budget 2026. The Finance Minister reiterated the importance of the Anusandhan Research Fund, aimed at strengthening India’s research ecosystem across universities and institutions. Complementing this, the government will establish a high-powered education-to-employment standing committee.
This committee will focus on employment generation, integration of AI-linked skills, and alignment of academic curricula with evolving job-market needs. For universities, this means greater accountability to outcomes; for students, it promises education that is more relevant, future-ready, and closely connected to real-world careers.
What This Means for Education Stakeholders
For students, Education Budget 2026 brings clarity and confidence—especially for those pursuing careers in healthcare, life sciences, applied psychology, management support services, and research. For universities and institutions, it is a call to upgrade infrastructure, revise curricula, build industry partnerships, and embrace skill-based and interdisciplinary education.
As India moves towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, this Budget reinforces the idea that education is not just about degrees, but about skills, innovation, and impact. Education Today will continue to track how these announcements translate into action on campuses and in classrooms across the country.
