New Delhi: Studying at an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has long been a dream for millions of students across the country—thanks to world-class education, rigorous academic culture, and exceptional placement opportunities. Reinforcing this reputation, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has scripted a new chapter in its placement history with a record-breaking offer.

₹2.5 Crore Offer Stuns Academia and Industry Alike

Edward Nathan Varghese, a final-year BTech Computer Science (CSE) student at IIT Hyderabad, has received an extraordinary placement offer of ₹2.5 crore per annum. The offer was made by Optiver, a leading global trading firm headquartered in the Netherlands. The announcement has left students, parents, and educators across the country astonished.

Who Is Edward Nathan Varghese?

Edward Nathan Varghese is just 21 years old and currently in his final year at IIT Hyderabad. A resident of Hyderabad, he completed his schooling from Classes 7 to 12 in Bengaluru. Coming from an academically inclined family—both his parents are engineers—Edward has consistently demonstrated strong analytical ability and technical depth.

Highest-Ever Package in IIT Hyderabad’s History

This ₹2.5 crore offer is now the highest salary package ever received by a student at IIT Hyderabad, surpassing the previous record of ₹1.1 crore set in 2017. The achievement has triggered widespread discussion on social media, with netizens lauding Edward’s dedication and the institute’s growing global standing.

Hard Work, Skills, and Consistency Paid Off

Edward’s success is the result of years of consistent hard work, academic excellence, and focused skill development. Alongside his formal coursework, he invested significant effort in honing problem-solving, programming, and quantitative skills—key competencies valued by global trading firms.

Pre-Placement Offer After Summer Internship

Edward secured this landmark offer through a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO). He had completed a two-month summer internship at Optiver, during which his performance impressed the leadership and mentors. Based on his exceptional contribution, the company extended a full-time offer even before the final placement season.

Interestingly, Edward revealed that Optiver was the first and only company he interviewed with. He described the moment as surreal when his mentor informed him that the company had decided to offer him the role.

A Milestone Moment for IIT Hyderabad

Edward Nathan Varghese’s achievement is not just a personal milestone but also a proud moment for IIT Hyderabad, highlighting the institute’s rising prominence on the global recruitment map and inspiring aspiring engineers across India.

Mid-market Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are set to generate 40,000 new jobs in India by the end of 2026, expanding their workforce to over 260,000, according to ANSR data shared with The Economic Times.

Around 120 new mid-sized GCCs are expected during this period, spanning software, banking, finance and accounting, insurance, and retail. These centres are being set up by global firms with annual revenues between $300 million and $2 billion.

Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and Gurugram will be key hiring hubs, with in-demand roles including:

  • AI/ML engineering
  • Data analytics
  • Cloud engineering
  • Cybersecurity
  • Full-stack development
  • Product management
  • Solution architecture

Non-tech roles in finance, supply chain, procurement, and digital marketing are also in demand.

Their catchment pool of talent is from GCCs, startups, product companies, and the top 8–10% of the service provider landscape, who could become a site leader for a mid-sized company,” said Smitha Hemmigae, MD at ANSR.

Unlike tech giants, mid-market GCCs operate with tighter budgets, focusing on cost-efficiency and rapid digital transformation as they scale in India.

India’s mid-market GCC momentum is set to redefine the next phase of global tech and operations hiring.
